Too many times have I heard exasperated parents complain that they are unable to help their children with maths as it is so different now days and they don't want to confuse them. Even as a teacher I have been told by my own children ' That is not what the teacher said' or 'She definitely didn't tell us to do that' when helping my own children with their homework.

I sincerely believe that these issues are easily overcome by utilising a very simple approach that I am going help you employ. In addition, I will provide you with the knowledge and resources you need to confidently help you children.

The first problem is perception and confidence. Lack of confidence in children and parents can cause barriers in learning. A child may perceive differences due to very subtle variations in the method of explanation or the method itself. Language itself can also create misunderstandings and misconceptions. In actuality, the principles have not change, just how we utilise them. Most adults were taught maths using more prescriptive and procedural methods than those used today. This means you may know how to do something but have no idea why you are doing it that way, this makes it very difficult to pass on your knowledge. This is compounded by the fact that most children today are taught using methods than attempt to provide a depth of understanding that make it easier for the child to understand why they are doing something and thus easier for them to recall and apply methods.

The benefit of this approach, for you, is than there is no right way to answer a question or solve a problems, there are many different ways to get to the same destination.

On this website I will attempt to provide you with the practical tools you need to help and support your children in maths in blogs. It is also important to bear in mind that we are all different and although one way may seems the easiest way to you, your child may have a different perspective and this is fine, if it works for them go with it.
